Post-Graduation Work Permit Program

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program in Canada enables international graduates from eligible institutions to gain valuable Canadian work experience, which can be instrumental in qualifying for permanent residency.

Key Features of the PGWP:

  • Open Work Permit: The PGWP allows graduates to work for any employer across Canada without requiring a job offer at the time of application.

  • Duration: The length of the PGWP depends on the duration of the study program completed:

    • For programs lasting between 8 months and less than 2 years, the PGWP is typically issued for a period equal to the length of the study program.

    • For programs of 2 years or more, the PGWP may be valid for up to 3 years.

    • As of February 15, 2024, graduates of master's degree programs shorter than 2 years may also be eligible for a 3-year PGWP. Canada.ca

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for a PGWP, applicants must:

  • Graduate from an Eligible Institution: Complete a program of at least 8 months in duration at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) that leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate. Not all programs at DLIs qualify; it's essential to verify program eligibility. Northeastern International Hub

  • Maintain Full-Time Student Status: Generally, students must have maintained full-time status during each academic session of the program, with exceptions for part-time status in the final academic session or approved leaves from studies. Northeastern International Hub

  • Apply Within 180 Days: Submit the PGWP application within 180 days of receiving written confirmation (e.g., transcript or official letter) from the institution indicating that program requirements have been met.

Recent Updates (Effective November 1, 2024):

  • Language Proficiency Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate language proficiency by taking a recognized immigration language test. University graduates need a minimum level of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in English or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) 7 in French across all four language areas. College graduates require a minimum level of CLB/NCLC 5. Littler Mendelson P.C.+1SAIT+1

  • Field of Study Requirements: Certain programs may have specific field of study requirements linked to occupations in long-term shortage. It's important to verify if your program aligns with these criteria. Canada.ca

Application Process:

  1. Prepare Required Documents: Gather necessary documents, including:

    • An official letter and transcript from the institution confirming completion of the program.

    • Proof of valid status in Canada or evidence of departure if applying from outside Canada.

    • Language test results demonstrating required proficiency levels.

  2. Submit the Application: Applications can be submitted online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) portal. Applicants need to create or sign into their IRCC account, complete the application, and pay the required fees, including the open work permit holder fee and the standard work permit fee. IRCC

  3. After Submission: If applying from within Canada before the study permit expires, graduates may be eligible to work full-time while awaiting a decision on their PGWP application. McGill University+1Trent University+1

Additional Considerations:

  • Validity of Study Permit: If the study permit expires before applying for the PGWP, graduates have up to 90 days to restore their status and apply. Failure to do so may require leaving Canada and applying from abroad. Canada.ca

  • One-Time Issuance: Individuals can receive only one PGWP in their lifetime.

For comprehensive and up-to-date information, it's advisable to consult the official IRCC website or seek guidance from the international student services office at your institution.
